How to Stop Windows 10 From Updating Itself

  1. Home
  2. Windows
  3. Windows 10

So, I have an issue with a client's workstation. I have installed and reinstalled Office 2016 Pro Plus twice, all because every time Windows, and by extension Office, updates, it de-activates and cannot be re-activate it.

Is there a way to stop this from happening or at least kill the activation request?

Hi Eric,
You'd Be looking for general DNS issues on the machine and I'd look at flushing your dns. Also make sure you haven't hardcoded any Microsoft services (such as autodiscover.outlook.com, autodiscover.<yourdomain.com> to say a few in your hosts file. I've seen people try to rectify dns propagation from domain changes by doing that only to bite their backsides later)

The tool I suggested above is also worth a look it's Microsoft's own diagnostic tool for 365 issues. It will tell you if your DNS is problematic, if you have the right supporting patches installed amongst other issues and fixes. Follow the wizard through for your specific issue and see how you get on.

Be sure you don't have any mixed office installs on the Workstation. Office 365's subscription packages sadly don't play well with other versions.

Unfortunately you also can't stop office 365 from validating/reactivating. It :-

- periodically checks against your 365 account to ensure your license is still valid.
- when a 365 update is applied it sometimes requires revalidation

If you're constantly getting activation issues also ensure you don't have any DNS issues going on.

If you continue to have problems, Microsoft offer a tool to diagnosing several office 365 related issues you can find it here:

Only 1 workstation ?

If only 1 and Office 2016....double check the product key or re-enter the product key manually.

When the issue began, i went and fully uninstalled Office 2016 and the made sure that the pre-installed copy office was fully removed, then reinstalled Office 2016, and the issue resumes immediately upon checking and installing updates.

However, i didn't initially see any DNS issues originally. What DNS issues should i be checking for?

I have re-entered it manually when the issue asserts itself, it simply closes the activation window without activating.

Check the source of your OS, MS Office media and product keys.

Then check the AV and windows event logs for error.....

This looks more than MS Office issue as the last time I saw this, the machine was compromised and some malware was diverting data (I think there was some search tool bar or speed up tool bar that user accidentally installed via browser).
